Welcome!

Welcome to Developing Programmers — a journal of ideas, tools, techniques and anything else relevant to a coder who is taking “the next step” into commercial software development and realizing there’s more to it than cranking out a program that works.

Roughly weekly I will add an article about a topic relevant to developing programmers. The articles will include things like:

  • What is a Configuration Management System and why would I want one?
  • How and why to organize your code so that others in your team can read it and safely modify it.
  • What is enough documentation?
  • What skills do experienced employers look for?
  • Code as a form of communication.
  • Testing, both informally and formally.
  • Sleep or Caffeine?
  • What is “extreme programming”? Does it involve jumping out of an airplane?
